Jingle Bells

Well we are a spoilt bunch at Reading Room aren't we! First we were wisked away to Paris for our Christmas party - which was awesome.  I never want to get on a plane again after my herendous journey back - completely self inflicted.

Then last night we had another night out.. supposedly a "few beers". This turned into several and me having a slightly sore head this morning. Good night all round though :)

Hoorah

it's London fashion week!

I wish I was down in London town.
Not to worry I'm sure I'll be attending in a couple of years.

Planning my attack

on the trafford centre this weekend.

Yes I should probably use my pay to clear some of my overdraft.. but I start my placement on Monday & a girl has got to look fresh.

Wednesday 14 September 2011

hold the cornflakes

To promote Contagion - a new film about a deadly disease outbreak. Warner Bros have gone that extra step and got an ad agency to create billboards out of mold and fungus so overtime it would form the title of the film. I'd love to have been the person that came up with that one!

Reminds me of all the empty, moldy beer bottles we had in my 2nd year uni house. Grim.

Let's get lost somewhere beautiful..

Just a glimpse at the creative side of my dissertation. I'll bang it all on my website soon :)

Fatty

I've just received two t-shirts I ordered from Kate Morross & I'm too fat for one of them.

The falaffel burger & chips that I just devoured for my lunch doesn't seem like such a good idea now.

The day has finally arrived

that I hand in my dissertation! Ok it was yesterday.. but still.

Words cannot describe how happy I felt handing those 18000 words in.

I intend to have a relaxing week, no stress, no nearly having a heart attack because the idiots at Manchester Uni didn't bind my dissertation properly. True story.

I start my placement at Dinosaur on Monday & then hopefully at Reading Room after that. I'm really excited & hopefully everything will be chipper in the near future.

Monday 12 September 2011

time for bed

I've decided to change my typeface to Georgia because although I'm in the ad business and we're all supposed to BUM Helvetica I'm fucking bored of it.

I think Me and Georgia are going to have a wonderful relationship.

On that note it's time for bed & almost time for my dissertation hand in.

HELLO LIFE

its past 2am!

tea, tarts & tyranny

Is an event I just made up for a campaign.
Does it even make sense?
Would anybody want tyranny with their tart not to mention tea?

I bloody hope they do.

Welcome to 2011

Blogger has finally decided to release an iPhone app.. it's long overdue! Although it would happen JUST as I get the internet in my flat wouldn't it. Sleek new design & a smartphone app.. could it be that Blogger is finally trying to catch up with Wordpress & Tumblr?

I'm a bit in love

with this sexy cabinet by Charlie Crowther-Smith and Christian Taylor.
It would look lovely in my flat. If somebody wants to buy me an early Christmas present then feel free.

Converse - Canvas Experiment

WOW

Oops

We just upgraded our Sky to get the documentary channels and we're a bit obsessed with National Geographic.

MUST CONCENTRATE ON DISSERTATION

The end is in sight

Stressed. Overjoyed. Excited. Nervous. Terrified. Thoughtful.

Just some of the emotions I'm feeling right now. I hand in my dissertation on the 12th September which is around two weeks time. This means the end of my Masters and my education and me finally entering the big wide world. Not only have I got the stress of trying to finish my dissertation and produce an ad campaign, whilst working a full time job, I also have the impending pressure from my parents to get a job in advertising.

But to be honest.. I find it all a bit exciting!

I've also got two placements lined up, which I'm ever so ecstatic about. That takes the edge off a bit. I'm looking forward to spending all my time doing placements in the hope to find a job, rather than stressing about university deadlines.

Watch this space.

WHYISN'TTHEREANIPHONEBLOGGERAPP?

It's really frustrating considering I don't have the internet at the moment.
Sort it out.

Graduate Academy

Don't you just hate it when..

Your internet dongle runs out of your usage limit so you can't do anything worthwhile on the internet.

Broadband in every home by 2012? Get a grip.

New Blood: Fail

So I didn't manage to get a place working at New Blood. I didn't think I would with the stiff competition but you have to enter these things or why bother trying to get a job in advertising?

On another note
Me and James entered the D&AD Graduate Academy competition, which would be an amazing opportunity. The brief was to encourage the use of HP within the creative community. Apple is the brand of choice, even though it's generally more expensive for slower technology, less memory and infamously breaking after your 3 year guarantee runs out. (She says currently writing this post on a Macbook Pro).

We've had a shed load of deadlines recently and so developed the concept and produced our advert in less than a week. Pressure junkie. After researching HP and their workstations we discovered that they hard sell on the technical side of the products, which goes right over my head. Creatives want to know that they can run photoshop, whilst listening to music, surfing the internet, social networking and probably doing an array of other tasks.

Our idea was a viral advert, which started as an animation describing the new HP workstations. The voice over is epic and talks absolute nonsense really, because let's face it how many of us actually know what all these technical terms mean? Then James pushes the animation off the screen and starts describing why he loves his HP, pretty much the reasons I described earlier: I love my HP because I can Create, Make, Listen and Play. All at the same time. Our tagline is "Why Complicate things?"

The video itself was quite basic, as I couldn't get access to Final Cut and I basically had to teach myself After Affects in a day, did I mention I also have a full time job? So it was an extremely busy week. But we're both really happy with the results, it reflects the idea perfectly. I'll be posting it soon, watch out for the ever so small dig at Apple..

Unwanted experience.

I had my first dealings with an insurance company today. It was only over the phone but Jesus they were scary, I felt like I was being interrogated. All for a broken, poorly made, MDF wardrobe.

GUILTY

Thursday 12 May 2011

Probably invented by a man..

Top Shop's new augmented reality thingy. Allows you to see yourself wearing an outfit without the bother of trying it on. I think it's a great idea.. especially when the summer months come, nobody wants to be stuck in a sweaty changing room with a curtain that doesn't quite close properly.

New Blood

I applied to work at the D&AD New Blood event this year.

Sunday 8 May 2011

Anyone for a Pimms?

The new Pimms summer party campaign has launched. So far I've come across the funny TV spot which highlights the best and worst bits of summer in Britain (I'll be counting how many socks and sandals I see) and the new website. I like the campaign it's just a shame I dislike Pimms, I haven't got much of a sweet tooth. Enjoy.

RIP CRUSHA CATS

Hello Cravendale cats. Probably the cutest advert ever. Cravendale never disappoint. I'm glad they've decided to use a new idea though, the old ads were getting a little stale.

homesick

I don't 'arf miss my little sisters. They live in Nottingham & I'm all the way in Manchester so I hardly get to see them. They're little monsters and I love them :)

Wednesday 4 May 2011

why battle with central london?

These are some of the final ads for my Westfield Stratford City campaign. The main problem was advertising to people who wouldn't go to a shopping center as a cool alternative to trendy areas of London like Carnaby Street and Camden. I therefore had to focus on the convenience of Stratford City and use humor for them to relate to the campaign.

The idea behind the campaign was why bother with the hassle of central London, the bad weather, the crowded streets, the transport, etc, when there's Stratford City with everything you need on your doorstep.

busy bee

I haven't blogged in a few weeks but I've been pretty busy with Uni and I had a nice trip to Nottingham to see the family. Before I went to Notts I did a photoshoot for a brief I'm doing. I'd definitely say it was the most stressful shoot I've done, completely last minute and it had to be done that day. All the photography studios were booked over at All Saints campus and I wasn't allowed to borrow an SLR because I'm not a 'photography' student, which is ludicrous. Did they think I was going to bash it against a rock or something? Edge Hill is much better than MMU for facilities and equipment! Anyway, thankfully my friend who was also lending me her flat to do the shoot had an SLR and another friend had a massive flash.

This is the makeshift set

I wanted the photos to be over exposed (think Viv Westwood Gold Label). Thanks to a wonderful photographer they came out perfect, better than expected!

A big thanks to Louise, Charlee, Laura and James for sparing a few hours and helping me out! I'll be uploading the photos soon.

Never Wasted

Cool bag design from Lee. Jumping on the eco-friendly bandwagon it shows you numerous ways to reuse the bag. Fun idea, I'm surprised it didn't come from Levis.

POOP

Great Viral from sneaker freaker!

My flat is a magazine graveyard. No magazine is safe when I'm doing a sketchbook. Sneaker freaker included!

Inspiration

I've been looking for inspiration for a new brief I'm doing and came across these adverts.. Although they look like something I could have made at undergrad level. I love them.
Especially the first one.

Yes probably..

Great execution

BUT it just makes me think about pandas..
I still don't particularly care about tuna..
Bad person.

I love

SPRING!

And not just for the easter eggs!
I love the weather and how everyone is instantly more cheerful when there's the slightest bit of sun. In summer we take it for granted and moan about being too hot (or is that just me?).

Friday 25 March 2011

I wish this was my office!

I'd love to work in an office like this.
Sadly I do not.

I work in a hot, stuffy office with locks on the windows because we're extremely likely to fall out of them.

I do date processing.. or entry.. or something.

It pays the bills and I can go to work straight from uni.

Did I mention we get free tea and coffee?
It tastes rank.

The highlight of my week is dress down Fridays..

Please somebody give me a job in advertising.
Pretty Please?

Singapore for Lunch?

A top dog from Accenture came to my art direction class this week and gave a presentation on the media buying industry. Normally when graphs and stats are involved a small part of me dies but this was really interesting. At the risk of sounding pretentious, it's inspiring to hear someone talk about something they're clearly passionate about! He said something a long the lines of.. "I flew to Singapore last week for lunch." Mind Blowing. The furthest I went for lunch last week was the Northern Quarter.

Glayva

YCN Glayva brief finally completed and entered today. Here's a sneak peak..

Tuesday 8 March 2011

Cute

I have recently stumbled on the illustrator Kate Sutton. Love her work, simple & quirky ideas. I'd definitely suggested checking her out.

POP

Loving the new 7UP logo, has a retro feel to it.

7UP is nicer than sprite. Fact.

But to be fair I have no brand loyalty to Coca Cola or PepsiCo...

Friday 4 March 2011

the shame!

This is me at Wireless festival last summer... wiping my feet.. wearing espadrilles...

If you were in the northern quarter yesterday you probably would have seen an angry faced girl whose shoes kept flying off every two seconds. It would appear I no longer have the ability to wear espadrilles. Could it be possible that in the last 8 months I have become increasingly more idiotic? I better not try flip flops.. I'll have somebodies eye out!

Facebook Vs Twitter

Cool Facebook Vs Twitter Infographic

Wednesday 16 February 2011

drink safe

I'm currently researching alcohol advertising for a university project and credit has to be given to Magners for making cider over ice a cool drink and to Dissoranno and Tia Maria for their cheesy yet successful recent campaigns. But Absolut is the clear winner. I have seen a lot of their print stuff in the magazines I read some TV spots but I didn't realise there was so much.. and it's all fantastic!
